Shcherbatiuk Yakiv and Yaryna

Yakiv and Yaryna Shcherbatiuk worked in a bakery in the village of Bilopillia in the Vinnytsia region. Among their regular customers were the Jewish Shvartsmans. With the beginning of the German-Soviet war, the eldest son of this family was mobilized to the front. When the Nazis began to persecute Jews, Davyd asked Yakiv to temporarily shelter his 12-year-old daughter Yevheniia, and he and his wife Nehama tried to hide in the forest. But later the Shcherbatiuks learned that the Shvartsmans had been killed near the village of Chornorudka in the Zhytomyr region.

Yaryna and Yakiv understood how dangerous it was to hide a Jewish child, but they could not leave Zhenia to her fate. Their daughters were married and lived separately, so the husband and wife decided to take all the responsibility on themselves. The girl was a real comfort and helper for the Shcherbatiuks, even after the war ended. None of her relatives survived the Holocaust, so she stayed to live with her named parents until their death. And only then did she emigrate to Israel.

In 2002, Yad Vashem recognized Yakiv and Yaryna Shcherbatiuk as Righteous Among the Nations.
